Why design?

No one builds a house without blueprints.  Why would building your outdoor living spaces be any different?  Rootbound is a custom landscape design firm.  We help our clients create beautiful spaces.  Our personal connection to the earth fuels a passion to help others create, build and connect in a new and deeper way.   Our goal is to assist the customer in a journey of beauty.

The landscape process can be costly.  Most home landscapes are 10-20% of the value of the total property.  We have found people investing that type of capital are happier and get a better value with a process like ours.  With value focused on planning and dreaming up front,  obtaining bids and proceeding with implementation unfold with less unwanted surprises in the end.  The resulting design is planned to...

create. place. connect

11 Step Process We Follow

Steps 1-7: Design Phase

Step 1, Initial Contact:   Initial phone call or email interview.  In that conversation we discuss our process, your needs and we set our first face-to-face appointment.  We send you a Questionnaire to fill out and return before that first meeting.

Step 2, Interview Meeting:   When we meet in person for the first time we conduct an interview covering the completed questionnaire and all the photos you provide showing us your dreams.  We do a complete site walkthrough and overview of the project.  Our goal in this meeting is to mine for as many details as possible, your hopes, ideas and space conditions.

Step 3, Design Profile & Contract: We outline the details the design will address, the scope of the project and the estimated design cost.  This forms the design phase agreement (steps 1 through 7).  An E-mail confirmation with changes and agreement acts as the design contract.

Step 5, Preliminary Conceptual Design & Presentation(s): This may be more then one meeting depending on the size and scope of your project.  In this phase you will see black and white plan view drawings that are beginning to unpack all your needs in combination with site demands.  We will begin to talk about materials, themes, problem areas and initial creative ideas.  We share pictures of these ideas to help you envision the progress of the design.  Ballpark budget conversations will help ensure a feasible outcome.  This meeting is a collaboration, giving you input opportunities to influence the design so that we progress in the direction you want.  The goal of this meeting is clarity both making sure you are aware of our artistic progress, and we are clear on your needs for the space.

Step 6, Revisions: Changes are made per preliminary presentation feedback from you.  Site and material details continue development and drawings are redrawn.

Step 7, Final Conceptual Design & Presentation(s): In the final conceptual design you will see a color plan view drawing with some site details.  Often a planting plan will accompany this drawing when appropriate. In this meeting installation phases and build priorities will be identified.  Discussions on how best to proceed will render a plan for moving forward.

Steps 8-11: Build Phase

Step 8, Detail Drawings & Budget Study: Depending on the complexity of the site and design, construction details & section/elevation drawings may need to be produced.  With hardscape construction, patios, decks, steps, pools etc. building the concept on paper through these drawing is the best way to facilitate a quality product.  Many times county, town, homeowners and architectural review boards demand these drawings to insure a safe quality product.  These also can facilitate an apples to apples bidding process if that is the direction needing to be taken. Bids and budget studies will produce real numbers for each phase and project identified in the final conceptual meeting.  These numbers will build your construction contract.

Step 10, Implementation: We regularly evaluate project process and quality.  It is our job to make sure your reaching the outcome you desire and to make sure construction, safety and industry standards are being upheld by the contractor.  We watch construction quality, materials details and overall design implementation.  Seldom does a project go in without a hitch.  You seeing work in real life, weather holdups or materials issues can often bring up questions.  We are there to help work those snags through and to maintain progress toward the final product.

Step 11, Follow-up Package: A landscape is four-dimensional.  As time passes it grows, changes and evolves.  Plantings may need adjusting, maintenance programs assure a long lasting quality and nurturing a landscape helps it to reach its fullest beauty.   Annual plantings, potted gardens and irrigation systems all need yearly attention, whether by you or the good folk we collaborate with.  We would like to be part of that evolution so that your dreams and our product can come to their fullest fruition.
