Climbing Ivy Brings a Vertical or Horizontal Element to Your Northern Virginia Landscape

Northern Virginia Landscape Climbing Ivy

When looking to landscape on a vertical level, few plants eagerly climb a vertical surface such as a brick wall, fence, or lamp post, like ivy does. Available in a variety of sizes and colors from bright green to gold, climbing ivy is a perfect way to bring a touch of classical beauty to any landscape. Ivy can also protect walls and fences from weather damage.

Ivy's climbing ability is due to its tiny roots that secrete a sticky substance that allows it to climb on just about any surface. However, if you choose to plant ivy to climb a brick wall, first make sure that the wall's mortar is intact, as older walls with crumbling mortar may be damaged by ivy roots. Ivy can also act as a groundcover and spread horizontally, especially when planted in the shade and under trees, where most grasses do not grow well.

Northern Virginia Landscape Ivy Preferences

Ivy prefers full to partial shade and can grow in just about any soil type, particularly well-drained soil. Ivy should be periodically checked for any signs of pests, including scales, aphids, and spider mites. Ivy can be a vigorous, dense grower, so it should be periodically trimmed, especially in the spring.
