Imagine standing at the window of your Warrenton, Ashburn, or Oakton home and looking out at your very own hummingbird garden, populated by colorful hummingbirds dancing from flower to flower. Sound too good to be true? Don't worry - creating a hummingbird garden is surprisingly easy.
When designing your hummingbird garden, select flowers that bloom at different times of the year, so flowers attract hummingbirds throughout the year. Plants with leaves provide nesting materials for hummingbirds, as do lichens moss, as well as willow and eucalyptus trees. Hummingbirds do not have a sense of smell, so when selecting plants, opt for bright colors, notably red flowers of a trumpet or tubular shape.
It's a good idea to incorporate hummingbird feeders in your garden to provide nectar as flowers go in and out of bloom. Choose red feeders to attract hummingbirds, and fill your feeders with a sugar-water mix - never honey, which can be fatal to hummingbirds.
Create areas of both sun and shade so the hummingbirds can perch in the shade in between feedings. Also include a birdbath for the hummingbirds to drink from and bathe in, but make sure you regularly change the water to prevent mosquito habitation. Then sit back, relax, and take in your new hummingbird garden!
