Relaxing Water Feature Ideas for Your Northern Virginia Landscape

Northern Virginia Landscape Water Features

Nothing beats the tranquil sound of cascading or bubbling water, but you don't need to travel to the ocean to hear it. Adding a soothing water feature to your Northern Virginia landscape is easier than you think. Need some ideas for your water feature? Read on.

Landscape Design: Water Feature Types

  • A waterfall built out of natural rock can be easily installed using a few boulders or flat rock, pump, and water basin.
  • A traditional bird bath can be augmented with a built-in pump to keep the water moving.
  • A wall fountain or water wall can be mounted on an outdoor wall or patio fixture and often allows water to cascade over such materials as slate and river rock. These water features are a good option for limited space, such as urban homes on small lots.
  • A container fountain can be created by outfitting a terra cotta pot, stone pot, or clay urn with a pump that pushes water to bubble, splash, or spill into a reservoir.
  • Formal ponds can be constructed in any shape, be it rectangular, circular, or square, and must feature running water to stay clean. Consider adding a fountain or bubbler in the center, as well as a seatwall around the pond.
  • Natural ponds are normally free form in shape and include rocks and stones around the border.
  • A pool waterfall can add visual interest to your pool and plumb into your existing pool circulation system.
  • Free-standing waterfalls can be made of layered bowls topped with rising jets, so that water fills each bowl before cascading down to the next.
  • Solar-powered fountains require no wiring or plumbing and cost nothing to operate, as they rely only on natural sunlight.
  • Stone corner waterfalls can be installed to patios and decks that adjoin exterior walls.
