It's no question that fire pits are a beautiful and interesting addition to any landscape. Steadily growing in landscape design popularity, fire pits produce an intimate, cozy atmosphere and provide for a great gathering and conversation space. With proper design and construction, fire pits can become a true outdoor living space.
Fire pits can be constructed in a variety of designs, styles, and shapes. Square fire pits complement formal and structured gardens and offer a high-end feel that may not be extremely conducive for conversation. In contrast, round fire pits work best for conversation pit areas and are often accented by surrounding benches and seats. Fire pits can be built into tables or even be in the form of an outdoor fireplace, built into a wall or backdrop.
No matter the style of the fire pit, it should complement your existing landscape. If your yard offers a view, place the fire pit at a place within the property that allows you to take in the view while gathering with friends. Place the fire pit in an area where it is most conducive to other landscape features; a fire pit near the pool would offer a great way to jump out of the pool and get right into a warm spot. Above all, plan for safety. Do not place a fire pit any closer than at least 10 feet from anything flammable, including any overhead tree branches. Never place a fire pit in an enclosed area, unsteady surface, or in a high traffic area.
