What are Native Plants and Why Are They So Important to Your Northern Virginia Landscape?

Native plants are those that evolved naturally in a particular area before settlers brought plants from foreign lands. Native plants are ideally suited to their environment, including local soil, temperature, and water conditions, as these plants have evolved to grow and thrive in their original environment.

Landscaping with native plants is extremely beneficial to your yard, schedule, and wallet. Native plants come in a diverse range of flowers, foliage, shrubs, and trees. When landscaping with native plants, be certain that you are matching that plant to its natural growing conditions, just as you would with any other plant.

Once established, native plants are very low maintenance, requiring few - if any - pesticides or fertilizers and very little additional water. Having evolved to resist local insects, fungi, and other pests, native plans are less prone to disease and in general require less care than plants that do not come from your region.
