Northern Virginia Landscaping: Snow Removal

Snow Shoveling Doesn't Have to Be a Pain

Snow shoveling is considered a moderate exercise, and just as any other form of exercise, you must do it correctly in order to avoid injury. There's a correct way to shovel snow to minimize health risks ranging from a sore back to hypothermia. Follow these steps to ensure you stay healthy while braving the winter elements.

  • Pick a snow shovel that it's in good condition and allows you to easily toss the snow off to the side. Look for ergonomic snow shovels that have smaller blades to pick up less snow.
  • Avoid drinking and consuming stimulants, such as caffeine and nicotine before shoveling, which can increase your heart rate and place stress on your heart.
  • Dress in layers.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • Warm up and prepare for shoveling. Stretch your legs, torso, and shoulders.
  • Lower your body and use your legs when picking up snow. Your legs are far stronger than your back, so use them!
  • Avoid fully rotating your torso when tossing snow to the side. Once you have picked up the snow, turn your whole body - not just your torso - and face the direction you want to toss the snow.
  • Change hand grips and the alternate the direction you toss the snow throughout the process.
  • Pick up manageable portions of snow to decrease back strain.
  • Pace yourself and take breaks when you need them.
