ALL THE TRIMMINGS
With winter upon us and plants going dormant in our landscape, I like to fill just a few of my flower pots with trimmings to enjoy in the off-season. If you’re looking for some inspiration, here are some of my favorites:
Picea abies, Norway Spruce - Can’t beat the drama of these droopy boughs
Tsuga canadensis, Hemlock
Magnolia grandiflora, Southern Magnolia - Not hardy here, but can be purchased from florists
Buxus, Boxwood
Juniperus, Juniper (& berries)
Cornus sericea, Redtwig Dogwood - Cut stems add strokes of red and height interest
Hydrangea paniculata, Hardy Hydrangea - The golden tan spent flowers are beautiful contrasted against greens
Rhus, Sumac - Great way to add a punch of red with their fruit clusters
Astilbe, False Spiraea - Their spent flowers hold up well and provide color and textural contrast
