  • Design Philosophy

Our team develops beautiful, creative solutions for sites that connect our clients to nature by forming collaborative relationships, while going through a process which is founded on over a quarter century of experience. These designs include every aspect of an outdoor space from pool to pavilion, from patios to plants from firepits to lightings and kitchens to showers.

After starting and running two successful landscape design/build firms for over 20 years the desire to engage differently in the industry created a crossroads. This brought a paradigm shift from production mindedness to design centeredness. We have found the most successful spaces come from a detailed design process. A process beginning with research, analysis and client engagement, then expanding into problem solving; resulting in beautifully, organized spaces that connect our clients to their natural surroundings.

Our typical design process starts with interviews, questionnaires and site visits. We engage in a collaborative picture study with the client, check municipality requirements, site conditions, environmental requirements and anything that may affect initial design interventions. On top of this analysis, our team group-charettes ideas. Often our first round of client meetings will have more than one visual design option to help engage a conversation and encourage client input. These are then edited, revisions made and circular engagement process takes place. With a conceptual masterplan complete the team will work on 3D renderings if needed and all design documentations required for permitting and bidding. Often, we are working alongside architects within this process, either in response to home design plans or when required for our own design interventions to move forward.

This process is the same if we are planning a small sitting area in a back yard or a full resort home on the lake. We are a design focused, client-centric, outdoor project management firm.

  • Environmental Philosophy

We believe in an active partnership to our natural surroundings. We embrace this through many avenues such as: the use of native plant selections, developing sustainable solutions and evoking our client’s sense of place in the spaces we create. We commonly work with EGLE, critical dunes, wetlands, ponds, native meadows, sediment control, lake side settings with sea walls and more.

Our view on sustainability is that no one client and no one setting is the same. And that sustainability can only be reached when site conditions or environmental needs are blended with client perspectives. Afterall something is only sustainable if someone sustains it. Therefore, our projects are approached with a sensitive hand to nature while embracing the understanding of those unique customer needs.

Sustainability has four major requirements: Policy, Economy, People and Ecology. We take each of these into account when planning a sustainable space. When viewing projects through this lens, results will be within code, affordable now and long-term, connect to the owners, and respect and enhance the ecology of the site.

As a company we are committed to limiting our carbon footprint, recycling, celebrating repurposed materials, using local manufactures where available, and encouraging informed plant choices.

  • Business Philosophy

Our business philosophy is embedded in collaboration. While our design process includes the client; our final installed product fundamentally hinges on good craftsmanship from others. Because we are design focused and don’t have in-house installation crews we have purposefully opened the door to these relationships. Within this setting we have the unique opportunity to separate projects into need specific pieces, sourcing portions targeted to appropriate skills. This allows us to direct the needed craftsmanship to specific installation requirements or to price shop portions that could save money on the whole. Pool builders will build the pool, electricians will provide power needs, carpenters will build the arbors etc. We help source, secure and oversee all of those moving parts.

We find better results in quality and cost when we open ourselves to the skill of others. We also find our customers appreciate having someone oversee all these moving pieces, help stage the work flow and oversee the details to assure a quality final product. We position ourselves to support bidding, contracting & project management to help deliver the highest quality and most cost-effective solutions. Collaborating with others culminates in a better product at a more competitive price. We work alongside the client, most importantly in the interest of the client, to navigate these partners to a successful end.
